Watermelons.
The story of how Tracy and I met is a cute and fitting tale (It was a Fucked Up show). After dating for awhile I realized that we had an encounter a few years prior to what we thought was our initial meeting.
I bring this up because I saw a flier for the Watermelon festival today. My mind immediately traveled back to that festival in the year of 2006.
I was in town after a week long vacation and had to be in Richmond for work. I was still living in D.C. and occasionally commuting to this area for business related matters. I decided to take the opportunity to check out my favorite carytown shops while in town for the weekend.
I wandered into Need Supply in search of a new pair of shoes. I had a really bad shoe buying habit back then. Need had a DJ set up that day for the MelonFest. While I was standing in line a song started playing that got my attention. I immediately ran over to the DJ (who I thought was super cute) and asked who she was playing.
It was THIS:
She showed me what record the song came from and it appeared to be some sort of random 80’s new wave comp that I figured I would never come across. I mentally scribbled the track in my head and went on my merry way. I immediately walked over to Plan 9 and found a different release with the song.
I share this tale because I find it pretty humorous that my first encounter with Tracy was triggered by a freaking Flock of Seagulls song.
